What are Ages of Time in Scripture?

As a child of the 60’s, I was bombarded with the message that the “Age of Aquarius” was coming. In my state school studies, I was taught about the “Ice Age”. Did you ever wonder what is an “age” within Time?

The Bible refers to the sun and moon as “lights in the firmament” that give us the seasons, days and years (Genesis 1:14).

Time, as we know it, is the measurement of the earth’s revolution around the sun. It takes 365¼ days to make up one year. A day is the time it takes for the earth to spin on its axis. That takes 24 hours. Time is directly connected to the physical universe.

So, did Time exist before there was a universe? Technically, no; for time is the measurement of the earth’s revolution around the sun.

Eternity is the concept of existence that has no beginning and no end. Time is just a segment within existence. Before Time there was Eternity. When Time ends, Eternity recommences.

So, what are Ages and how do they fit within the concept of Time?

Age of Creation

“Age” is used to represent different periods of changes in the earth’s surface. The Bible starts by saying, in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1). It has a dateless past.

It appears the original earth went through a catastrophic baptism of water becoming without form and void (Genesis 1:2). The earth was reformed to be habitable (Genesis 1:3 – 2:3). Because it the Creative Age was first, it is sometimes referred to as the Alpha Age and it is blended with Eternity Past.

Antediluvian Age

The great flood of Noah transformed the earth. Homo sapiens could live more than 900 years before (ante) the flood (diluvian). After the flood, human life span dropped to less than 100 years.

Before that catastrophic event, the earth was in an Edenic state and then devolved due to sinful human interaction. The Cainite civilization was wiped out during the end of the Antediluvian Age. Only one family survived – Noah’s.

Postdiluvian Age

We are living on the post-diluvian planet. Climate change commenced with Noah’s Flood and will continue to the end of this Age. Our present Age will end with catastrophic events that shake the planet.

Millennial Age

The Creator returns to His creation and stabilizes the planet (Revelation 19:11-20:6). The golden era will see fruitful fields, vegetarian lifestyles, and peace on earth. Jesus Christ will rule and reign from His throne in Jerusalem.

Somehow the perfect conditions will not be enough. A great rebellion will take place attempting to overthrow Christ’s government (Revelation 20:7-9). It will result in the destruction of planet earth. The earth’s very elements will be melted through a baptism of fire (2 Peter 3:10).

Age of Perfection

The Bible tells us there will be a new earth (Revelation 21:1). It does not tell us how long that age will continue. It does seem to indicate that somehow it will be swallowed up into Eternity Future (1 Corinthians 15:24-28).

In the end, there is only God. God is Eternity. Will you be in Him? Are you in Christ today? Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

In Jesus, you will survive the coming end of this Age.
